History
History of the Study Program
The Specialist Program in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University has evolved from anesthesiology services that were initially part of the Department of Surgery into an independent specialist medical education program with growing national and international engagement.
The Beginning
Anesthesiology was initially established as a section within the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University and Sanglah General Hospital. As clinical services and educational needs expanded, Anesthesiology gradually developed into an independent unit and subsequently established an autonomous specialist medical education program.

Establishment of the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Laboratory
Anesthesiology became an independent Laboratory of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, led by Dr. Wayan Sukra after completing specialist training in Anesthesiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia. From this point onward, medical student education and anesthesiology services were independently managed.
Expansion of Faculty Resources
Additional anesthesiology specialists joined the unit in 1985 and 1986. By 1990, the academic and clinical staff had grown to five anesthesiology specialists.
Development of Intensive Care Services
With the opening of the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit services were initiated, expanding the scope of anesthesiology and critical care services.
Initial Specialist Training Program
In July 2002, preliminary specialist training in Anesthesiology and Reanimation was initiated. Trainees came from the Specialist Medical Education Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, which served as the supervising institution at that time.
Independent Specialist Training
Following an evaluation by the Indonesian College of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, the Program was declared eligible to provide specialist training independently. The operational permit was issued through Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 3745/D/T/2006 dated September 28, 2006.
Strengthening Program Legitimacy
The Study Program's operational permit was renewed in 2009 and again in 2012. Subsequent operational authorization was maintained through reporting to the national higher education database.
Change of Study Program Name
The name of the Specialist Program in Anesthesiology and Reanimation was officially changed to the Specialist Program in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care under Udayana University Rector's Decree No. 453/UN14/HK/2021.
Growth and National Contribution
By 2025, the Program had grown to 34 active staff members, with four staff members having retired. The Program had graduated 155 anesthesiology specialists who were working in public and private hospitals across Indonesia.

From Bali to Indonesia and the World
Its location in Bali provides the Program with a strategic advantage in expanding academic networks, collaboration, specialist education, and competitiveness at both national and international levels.
Continuing the Legacy
From its early development as an anesthesiology service to becoming an independent specialist medical education program, the Specialist Program in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University continues to grow through education, clinical service, research, innovation, and collaboration to develop competent specialists who contribute to healthcare throughout Indonesia.
